A Song for Dad

5 March, 2021

Ben Drake, from Bedfordshire, lost his Dad, Barry, to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), in September 2020.

Barry bravely battled IPF for 4 years and was age 67 when he passed away. In his final selfless act, he donated his body to medical research in the hope of a better understanding of this terrible disease.

Ben says “On many occasions, dad struggled to get out of bed however, some days, our mum, Carol, would find him doing a range of exercises to try and help strengthen his muscles; he was determined to get himself back to the gym or into the swimming pool.  As kids, dad taught us to never give up and to aim high.

Over the past few months since losing dad, we have all been dealing with our grief in different ways. For example, I find it comforting to look at pictures and watch videos of dad whereas my mum and sisters can’t bring themselves to do this yet. We are, however always there for each other – talking about our feelings, laughing and sharing memories – and crying when the pain gets too much.

We are all having our highs and our lows, mostly lows at the moment; grief seems to grab you when you least expect it, and it doesn’t care what you are doing or where you are.  It is incredibly difficult to except that this brave, strong man is gone. “

Since losing his dad, Ben has been doing some incredible work to help raise awareness of IPF as well as the work that the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust does to help support patients and their families living with this terrible condition.

As a musician, Ben has produced a song called ‘There’ specially written in memory of his dad. The single is being released on Friday 16th April via Blaggers Records with all proceeds from streams and downloads going to the PF Trust. Ben is currently busy promoting the song via his social media channels and website The Ben Drake Collective Please keep an eye on our website and social media pages for the official download release announcement.

In recognition of his work and commitment, the PF Trust recently appointed Ben as an Ambassador.

Ben says “I am incredibly humbled and honoured to have been made an Ambassador for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust in Dad’s memory. I am also excited to announce that we will be releasing a single called ‘There’ with all proceeds from streams and downloads going to the PF Trust so they can continue helping those battling this crippling condition which, as of right now, has no cure.  Please help to spread the word and help raise awareness by adding the song to any playlists you have and share, share, share!”
